It’s hard to describe the synergy between Swedish pop sensation Robyn and her Creative Director/kindred spirit Mary Fagot. These two women are an effortless example of how two people can seamlessly work together while maintaining an enviable friendship, one that can only be described as a mutual girl crush.
Their efforts charm the masses because their foundations are so similar—at the heart, both women are unwilling to compromise their ideals for anyone but each other and they choose to create from an emotional, honest and subtle place… But that’s not to say the fruits of their collaboration are anything subtle.
Robyn and Mary talked on the phone for six months discussing the covers for Robyn’s Body Talk albums (created by artist and “body architect” Lucy McRae) before finally meeting in person in New York City on a photo shoot, where they immediately clicked.
We sat down with the duo at Mary’s home in L.A. as they discussed the vision behind Robyn’s interactive web experiences #KillingMe and the Interactive Beat Machine and how their approach to getting the word out online needs to be intelligent and have a real purpose. They’re not here to waste anybody’s time. They also both believe in the power of human connection and reaching a wide variety of people, which is how Robyn ended up performing in an intimate “honky tonk” bar in Mary’s hometown.
In their words, the experiences they’ve woven together so far walk the line between “messy and smart, sophisticated and street, and high and low.” Robyn says: “I like how you’re like me,” to which Mary promptly responds, “… just the darker version.” It’s within this kind of equilibrium that true invention can take root.
